The Portuguese dam program: economic and environmental disaster
August 2011
Summary
The Portuguese national large dam program (PNBEPH) is very bad business, a social burden and an environmental threat.
The 9 new dams represent only 0.8% of final energy demand in Portugal (3.2% of electricity demand) and 0.7% savings in greenhouse gas emissions. By comparison, electricity demand in Portugal grew by 4.7% in 2010. Ergo, the alleged “national public interest” is false.
